Many common genetic conditions are characterised by dental anomalies. This includes abnormalities in the number, size or shape of teeth as well as unusual soft tissue conditions. While some of these children will be managed in tertiary medical/dental settings, many will present to general dentists so a knowledge of their condition and associated co-morbidities will help improve the quality of care they receive.
In addition, children with syndromes and chronic medical conditions share some dental and behavioural characteristics and an awareness of these can ensure more appropriate management of the patient to achieve a good long-term outcome.
